Client’s Brief:
Our clients approached us with a clear and ambitious goal: to create a modern, spacious, and energy-efficient home that would stand apart from the generic residential developments so often seen locally. They had a very firm idea of the sort of internal spaces they wanted to achieve, taking full advantage of the countryside site and its beautiful views. They sought to let in as much sunlight and natural daylight as possible, with generous open-plan living spaces in contrast to the small, individual rooms of the existing farmhouse. Renewable energy and passive heating was also a priority, resulting in a design with large roofs to accommodate solar photovoltaic panels, and extensive areas of glazing to maximize solar gain in winter.
This vision generated extensions that were very different in appearance and character to the existing farmhouse, making it particularly challenging to integrate the new additions with the original building. The extensions needed to harmonize with the countryside setting while offering superior functionality and style tailored to modern family life.
Challenges:
The project presented several challenges, including the constraints imposed by Isle of Man countryside planning policies, which require sensitivity to the surrounding environment and a strong focus on preserving the character of the area. Additionally, the significant contrast between the contemporary extensions and the traditional farmhouse called for creative design solutions..
Using 3D modeling, we were able to test multiple design iterations to find the solution that most effectively brought together the new extensions and the existing building. This process allowed us to explore various configurations and ensure the final design aligned with both the clients’ aspirations and planning requirements.
Design:
The resulting design is a seamless blend of contemporary architecture and countryside charm. Two carefully designed extensions have been added to either side of the existing home, enhancing its functionality and aesthetic appeal. The new spaces include an open-plan kitchen and living area, maximizing natural light and framing views of the surrounding landscape. A material palette mixing modern and traditional materials, integrating with energy-efficient technologies, ensures the home is not only visually striking but also sustainable and future-ready.
This project illustrates that modern living and clients' unique, exacting requirements can be achieved within the constraints of rural planning policies. With imaginative design and close collaboration, homes in the countryside can be transformed without compromise. We look forward to bringing this vision to life.
